QUOTES AND NOTES
Winning coach: Chris Head, Chicago (Westinghouse) - ``I'm kind of greedy and the kids know I'm greedy. We made a couple mistakes in the first half and the kids knew what I was talking about and corrected it themselves. Overall we're real happy about the win and we're real happy about being down here. Like I've been saying all season, these kids have been setting goals all season and have been meeting them."
``The kids have done a tremendous job of doing what I ask of them all season long. We had some adversity, one of our young men lost his sister in a tragic accident, but we pulled together and the kids got behind him. We've been going through a lot of things as a basketball team but as a family we've taken care of those kinds of things."
``It was a better 32 minutes we played today then we did in the city championship game. We played good basketball today. If we can play basketball like that tomorrow and add some to it, I think we have a real strong chance of winning a state title. That's something our school has never done."
``(Greg) Klos didn't have a West Aurora game but I was afraid he might. I wasn't about to let that happen. We had made up our mind that we're not the type of team that plays a box and one. I may be stupid about that one but we made up our mind to just defend him and if we foul so be it. We wanted to get up on him and play real aggressive on him. We did a real good job on him, he only scored 19 but that's a heck of a lot better than scoring 29 like he did against Aurora West."
``The kids did a real nice job of not overlooking Glenbard. The kids got together, Darius (Glover) and Jamaal (Brown) in keeping the kids focused. Darius has done a real good job of that all season. If you'd seen him last year, it's 100% different this year. He's matured."
Losing coach: Bob Miller, Carol Stream (Glenbard North) - ``I was incredibly proud of the way our young men played today. Let's face it, we were out-manned and out-gunned on paper and they could have packed it in. I thought we made a couple good runs at them in the second half. One of the things we didn't do very well was play consistent basketball and you have to do that against a team like Westinghouse."
``We turned the ball over 19 times. When we played West Aurora we turned it over only 10 times and I think that was critical in the game today. I thought we did a good job in the press of getting the ball across but we had a little difficulty getting into our offense. And of course we allowed them to get too many second and third shots."
``We don't have that size but we have a tremendous amount of heart and I'm incredibly, incredibly proud to be their coach."
``I think the guard play tonight was incredible. What they did is I thought they did a very good job of seeing the court. They would penetrate, dish off, and get a quick easy basket and we were just a little slow on our reaction time because of their quickness, not only in the guards but also in their forwards and their centers. They penetrate real well and they see the open man very well."
(On Westinghouse) ``They're real focused. They came out early. I think they learned their lesson a little bit in the West Aurora game. They came out. They were no nonsense. They were not screwing around. They were not laughing and having a good time, they were focused. I think they have a definite goal and their definite goal is to win the state.
