QUOTES AND NOTES
Winning coach: Craig Patton, Springfield (Lanphier) - ``First of all I want to commend Coach Moss and Centralia for the fine year they had. They're very strong inside. The one thing that concerned us before the ballgame was them getting the basketball and knocking the ball into the postman and then reversing it back out. We had a hard time with that, especially in the second half."
``On a positive note I thought our defense, obviously in the second quarter when we held them to one point was the key to the game. We gave up 13 and 18 points in the third and fourth quarters. In the fourth quarter we let them dribble-drive too much because our inside help wasn't there. That's something we'll have to correct tonight when we play against the very athletic Westinghouse team."
``The free throws that we missed down the stretch are definitely a concern and its something we'll work on between now and the championship game. It kind of reminded me of the Super-sectional game against Pekin, where the kids were doing their best and trying their hardest and they just wouldn't fall. We'll bounce back and concentrate on it a little bit more for tonight."
``In the second quarter when Centralia was taking a lot of time off the clock, it wasn't really a concern. As long as we're ahead and we're playing defense the way we should be it really doesn't make any difference. I thought our kids did a good job in staying in front of them and taking away their passing lanes to the inside."
Losing coach: Rick Moss, Centralia - ``You talk about heart, I've got to stop acting like a baby here, but I'm proud of my kids. They worked real hard. Excuse my language but that (Andre) Iguodala's a bitch. He's a great player. They've got two great players. We got beat by two people. They scored what, 46 of their 56 points. If you told me we were going to limit (Niccos) Scott, what we did although Scott did a great job for them on the boards, he did a super job for them on the boards, but I thought our kids played with a lot of heart. When we lost Matt Shaw that really hurt us, hurt us very bad. He's a great, great south boy but our kids played with a lot of heart."
``You know me, I'm not the world's greatest Ram fan but I kind of used New England and the Rams in the Superbowl before the game. That's what I told our kids. I said you never know. I'm sure Florida didn't think they were going to get beat by Creighton. I'm sure Bobby Knight didn't think he was going to get beat by Southern Illinois. And I know Lanphier didn't think they were going to get beat by Centralia, well they didn't. I coached five years at Iowa and I used to be a Hawkeye but I hope he goes to Illinois because I'd like to see him keep playing and playing in the state of Illinois. He's a great player.
