QUOTES AND NOTES
Winning coach: Rick Moss, Centralia - ``It was just a few hours ago we were standing here all depressed and it's amazing how good you can feel after just a couple of hours. I didn't know what the kids would have in them but they sure showed a lot of intestinal fortitude. I'm very proud of these young men and what they accomplished today. There's only two teams who win their last basketball game on the last day of the season and we're proud to be one of them."
(On the Centralia tradition) ``I don't know if our kids realize anything about that. These guys are going to come out and play hard no matter what. I don't know necessarily if we wanted it more. New Trier is a great ball club, especially when you look back and see that they beat Proviso in the Super's. I thought our kids played real well and with a lot of heart."
``If you would've told me last November that we were going to finish third in the state, we'd have taken it. If you'd tell anybody that, even the number one team in the state, they'd take it because a lot can happen between November and now. We came in un-ranked and after this weekend, it's hard to say how we're going to come out. I know our fans felt all season we were under-ranked."
``I coached up in Chicago for five years and I know what it's like up there. And it's hard for them in that area to believe what's going on in southern Illinois. I hope that these young men showed them that we can play with anybody."
``The kids were loose before this ballgame and ready to play and that's pretty much how we were through most of the tournament series. It just shows you, you just got to get out there and play hard and they did that."
Losing coach: Rick Malnati, Winnetka (New Trier) - ``Again, I'm proud of my kids. I got a technical foul saying that we suck, talking about my team. I think he didn't like an abusive coach, I think I got a technical for being an abusive coach."
``It's a hard game to play, third and fourth place game. I'm not exactly sure, you know as a kid playing I think I would've loved to play in the game. When I got down here as a player we lost our first game and I always thought it would be cool to play in the third and fourth place game. But since I've been coaching, coaching in two of these games, it's a real hard game to play. It's a hard game to get kids really motivated for. You know you want to end the season on a winning note. There's only two teams that get to win on the last game of the last day of the season but when you're there it's hard."
``We did not prepare for Centralia just like Centralia did not prepare for us. When they shot it well in the first half we had to guard them mad and then they got a lot of inside looks. We couldn't guard them on the post. They did a nice job executing and then it got to be, by the time I got my technical the game got a little out of hand. I'm proud of my effort, the effort the kids gave. They played with a lot of heart. I think they showed the reason we were able to accomplish things nobody thought we were going to accomplish."
``At the beginning of the year if anybody would've told us we were going to be fourth in the state we would've been excited but when you get here and you have aspirations of a state championship it's a little disappointing. But I'm sure it's going to be fun to go out and be a fan right now and watch a great basketball game. I think the two teams that deserve to play for the state championship are in the state championship."
